About the Program
The Silver Scholars Program was created in the year 2001. The Yale SOM Deferred MBA program is an opportunity for seniors in college to start their MBA Degree at Yale immediately after graduation. The first year is spent at Yale SOM which is aimed at developing basic skills required to be a manager.
This is followed by the second year in which students are required to complete a full-time internship. This work experience can be continued for around 2 years. In the third year, students need to return to the campus and take elective courses of their choice and complete their degree at Yale.
Class Profile
The most recent class size of the Yale SOM is 350 out of which 40% are international students and 39% are women. 10% of the total are first generation college students. The median undergraduate GPA of the students is 3.65 while the middle 80% range is 3.31-3.92.
They come from different educational backgrounds like Engineering, Economics, Business, Humanities and Social Sciences, etc.
Eligibility Criteria
The students who are college seniors are eligible to apply for the Yale SOM Deferred MBA program. The graduation date should be on or before December of the previous year and by the next August, students must be scheduled to graduate. The coursework must be complete and the final transcript needs to be there along with proof of undergraduate degree conferral.

Requirements for Applying
One should know about the different requirements before applying to the Yale SOM Deferred MBA program and be prepared with all the necessary documents and proofs. The application form for the Yale SOM Deferred MBA program is the same as that of their full-time application. However, there are some additional requirements which are discussed below along with other requirements –
1) Personal information – This is a section in the application form in which all the questions are optional. Students can talk about their personal attributes that can help in explaining their academic choices, professional as well as personal experiences.
2) GMAT/GRE Score – The score in GMAT/GRE exams must be less than five years old from the date of submission of your application. For the most recent class, the median GMAT score is 720 and the middle 80% GMAT range has been 680-760.
The median GRE score in the verbal as well as Quant section has been 164. The middle 80% GRE range for the verbal section is 159-170. On the other hand, the middle 80% range for the quant section is 158-170.
3) TOEFL/IELTS Score – For international students, a score in English proficiency tests is also required. The score in TOEFL/IELTS exams must be less than two years old from the date of submission of your application.
4) 2 Letters of Recommendation – This is a special requirement for the applicants applying to the Yale SOM Deferred MBA program. One of these letters should come from an academic instructor who knows the applicant well and has graded her/his performance. The recommender should be able to elaborate on the applicant’s academic abilities.
The other letter of recommendation should come from an employer. This should be from a person for whom the applicant has worked in some professional capacity either during an internship or a part-time job. In case an applicant does not have any kind of work experience, then, a letter should be submitted from an extracurricular activity or volunteer organization in which the applicant has been involved.
5) Current Resume – This is an opportunity to tell about your work and activities throughout life in a chronological way. It should not be too long and error free.
6) Essay Question – There is just one essay question in the application. It is –
“Describe the biggest commitment you have ever made.”
Choose a topic wisely and the commitment can be personal, specific or expansive. Not only the topic but the content is equally important in the essay.
7) Video Questions – Every applicant receives three previously recorded questions after the submission of the application form along with the payment of the application fee. For two of the questions, you can take up to 20 seconds to think and 60 seconds to answer. For the third question, applicants are allowed 30 seconds to think and 90 seconds to answer.

Application Process
While applying to the Yale SOM Deferred MBA program, applicants are required to fill the same online application form as the full-time MBA program.
Please make sure not to write anything in the work experience section of the application. This must be mentioned in the resume in detail though. Also, there is an activities section in the application. This section should be used to highlight up to 2 activities in which you spend a significant amount of your time. If the applicant is an undergraduate student, nothing should be mentioned in the “Post-Graduate Activities” section of the application.
After the application form is evaluated, some of the applicants receive an invite for an interview. The interview is conducted with one or more members of the Silver Scholars Committee and lasts around 30 minutes. The main focus of the interview is the applicant’s personal goals and interests.
