Stanford GSB Deferred MBA is one of the best options to consider if you want to do an MBA after your graduation. About the Program
Stanford GSB Deferred MBA has been designed for students without any full-time work experience. Internships and part-time work experience are not considered professional experience. They welcome students of all diverse educational backgrounds who have good academic performance, have been involved in extracurricular activities, etc. Once a student completes her/his graduation or post-graduation, she/he will be able to join the regular MBA program after a period of 2 years of work experience. This is especially good for students who are not very sure about their long-term career path and want to explore an industry like private equity, biotechnology, management consulting, etc. before starting the MBA program.
Class Profile
The last class of the Stanford GSB MBA program had a total of 436 students. They belonged to different nationalities coming from different language backgrounds. The most recent class included students from 66 different countries. They came from diverse educational streams like Humanities, Social Sciences, Engineering, Business, etc. The students who want to take advantage of a full-time work experience before starting with the regular full-time MBA program apply through the Stanford GSB Deferred MBA option.
Eligibility Criteria and Requirements for Applying
There are two criteria that determine the eligibility of a person applying to the Stanford GSB Deferred MBA program. If you belong to one of these two below mentioned categories, then, you are eligible to apply –
1) Students who are in the last year of their bachelor’s degree or a joint bachelor/graduate program, and their degrees will be conferred by the end of September are eligible to apply for the Stanford GSB Deferred MBA program for next year.
2) Students who are presently studying in a graduate program, which was begun just after the completion of an undergraduate or undergraduate/graduate program are also eligible to apply.
3) Recommendation letters – In the case of a deferral program, students should choose those people as recommenders who have supervised their extra-curricular activities or work like internships or part-time jobs.
4) You can take either GMAT or GRE not more than 5 years earlier. They do not have minimum criteria for a score in these two exams. However, the average GMAT score of their students is around 733. The average score in the verbal section of the GRE is 165 whereas, the average score in the quantitative section is 164.
5) In the case of international students or students who have studied in non-English speaking universities, students are required to take language proficiency tests like TOEFL or IELTS or PTE. These tests should not be taken more than 2 years earlier.
The minimum score in TOEFL should be 100 in internet based test. Although the average score of their students in TOEFL is around 113. A minimum score of 7 is required in IELTS and an overall minimum score of 68 is required in PTE.
Application Process
There are different rounds of application to their MBA program. They have three rounds. For students who want to apply for the Stanford GSB Deferred MBA program, the third round of application is the best choice for them. The deadline date for the third round of application is generally in the beginning of April every year. Their notification for the same is given by the middle of May that year.
After deciding to apply for the Stanford GSB Deferred MBA program, one can start an online application for the same. It is highly recommended to use your personal email address instead of the university email address so that you can receive important information about your admission even after you have completed your degree in your deferral period.
This includes different details like the year in which you would plan to get enrolled, deferral period, etc. Also, they would like to know about your plans during the deferral period. They ask specific questions about it in their application.
They are looking for students who intend to be engaged productively in either full-time work or full-time study during this deferral period. After the evaluation of the application, they can offer a different deferral period than what you have filled in your application. An application fee of $100 needs to be paid while applying.
If you are going for the deferral program, you can also apply for some specific fellowship like Stanford Reliance Dhirubhai Fellowship or Knight-Hennessy Scholars. Please note that you can apply for the fellowship one year before enrolment at Stanford GSB.
If you pay attention to your overall profile that includes test scores, academic performance, extra-curricular experience, leadership qualities and other personal traits, etc., there are fair chances that you will be given a chance to enter the Stanford GSB Deferred MBA program. If they like your application, an invitation would be sent to you for an interview.
The interview can be conducted either in-person or online depending on the location of the applicant. The interview lasts between 45 minutes to an hour and is conducted in English. For the students who apply in the third round of application, the interviews are scheduled from the middle of April to the beginning of May.
