With so many programs available in the market, it’s always difficult for students to choose the best fit and the same goes for MIM or MSc programs. It is always difficult to make a choice of whether to go for MIM or MSc programs because there are a lot of common aspects of these two programs. To overcome that difficulty, this blog post will help you in making the right choice whether to go for MIM or MSc. programs. MIM stands for Master in Management and MSc. stands for Master of Science. This blog post will cover the program overview, entry requirements, and how to choose whether one should go for MIM or MSc.
Program Overview (MIM or MSc)
Master in Management (MIM) – MIM programs aim at providing a high-class management education, where a student will understand the basics of all business functions such as finance, marketing, operations, etc., linkages of these functions, leadership development, problem-solving, leading organizations, etc. The course allows students to study all the courses of business in the first 2 semesters and later they can go for a specialization in their desired field. But, still, MIM is a general management program, where you wouldn’t be considered as an expert in any field.
Master of Science (MSc) – MSc. program on the other hand offers a specialized program in one domain of the field of study. Generally, these programs are shorter in nature (1 year) and more focused on the advanced level of study for a particular domain. You are expected to know the basics of fundamentals of that particular domain. So, it could be Finance, Business Analytics, Supply Chain, etc. So clearly, you can become an expert by pursuing this course.
So, its a choice between Generalist and Specialist, when you are choosing either MIM or MSc.
Entry Requirements (MIM or MSc)
Master in Management (MIM) – You just need to hold a bachelor’s degree (3 or 4 years) in any discipline. The university should have the required accreditations and you should have fulfilled the right amount of credits in your bachelor’s.
Master of Science (MSc) – On the other hand, the eligibility requirements are according to the course you are applying to. Most of the universities would require a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in case most of the MSc. programs, as you need to have the fundamental knowledge of that domain, quantitative and research aptitude. This you will have to check according to the university you are applying to.
Apart from that, some universities might have special requirements in terms of work experience, certain grades in a few of your undergraduate courses, etc. For example, if you want to pursue a master’s in international business, then there would a requirement of commerce or business degree in your bachelor’s.
GMAT OR GRE (MIM or MSc)
A valid GMAT or GRE score is required. A competitive score would be 660+ in GMAT and it’s equivalent in GRE, but for top schools, it would go as high as 700+. Though it’s not mentioned by the schools, give GMAT if you are applying to MIM’s and GRE for MSc. programs. Though some schools do not have any GMAT or GRE requirements, we would encourage you to give either of the two, to strengthen your application, not only for an admit but also for scholarships.
Work Experience (MIM or MSc)
There is no requirement of prior work experience in the case of MIM programs, and generally, the class will have experience in the range of 0-2 years overall. But, in case of a few MSc. programs, schools might ask you for work experience, but that would never be more than 2-3 years. This is also not for all MSc. programs, but only for a few courses. In general, the work experience requirements are almost the same as MIM programs and the range is also (0-2 years).
Admission Essay/SOP, Letter of Recommendation, Interview Process (MIM or MSc)
For both the courses, a student will have to write an essay or SOP, a quantitative statement in case of MSc., 2 letters of recommendation from either their supervisors, professors, or anyone who has worked closely with the student. This is followed by the interview process in detail, which will cover a candidate’s work history, contribution to the firm, people, society, and leadership potential.
English Language Requirements (MIM or MSc)
If your language was not English, then you can appear in any of the global English language tests such as IELTS, TOEFL, etc. For both these programs, all the top schools would require a score of 7 in IELTS and 6.5 in some cases and it’s equivalent in TOEFL and other tests.
How should you decide which one to choose? (MIM or MSc)
There are a couple of points you can consider before planning your program
- You need to have a strong quantitative background if your planning for any specialized MSc. program.
- If you are certain about your field of study or your background fits into some particular subject, then go for MSc. else if you are not sure or just want to pursue a master’s or interested in management education, then you can go for MIM programs.
- If you already hold a 4-year degree, then also it will make more sense to go for an MSc. program
- Even if you go for an MSc. the program, you always will have the option of pursuing an MBA in the future if required.
- Lastly, if you are certain to be a specialist, then also MSc. will make more sense.
All these points are triggers to consider, but these are not golden rules. Choosing a program is the most important step, so consider all the aspects and do your research well. If this step will go wrong, then it can completely change your future.
